Miasto Głuchołazy pomyślane od chwili założenia jako warownia pograniczna musiało być umocnione. Początkowo opasano je wałem ziemnym, palisadą i fosą. W 1344 r. Głuchołazy występują jako miasto posiadające wieże obronne, musiało więc wtedy już mieć fortyfikacje murowane. Istniały dwie bramy miejskie: Nyska (pierwsza wzmianka z 1315 r.), później zwana Dolną (1374 r.), i Górna, wzmiankowana w 1418 r. Fortyfikacje miejskie w początkach XVII wieku były zaniedbywane i zrujnowane (według informacji z lat 1603 i 1622). Około 1600 r. staraniem wójta została wzniesiona baszta przy bramie Górnej, zachowana do dnia dzisiejszego. W 1552 r. wzniesiono staraniem wspomnianego już burmistrza Kirchnera ratusz renesansowy w zachodniej części rynku. Był to czworokątny budynek z kamienia łamanego, piętrowy, ze sklepioną piwnicą, podcieniami i drewnianymi schodami zewnętrznymi; dach zdobiła wieżyczka. Na piętrze mieściły się sala posiedzeń rady, kasa i pomieszczenia dla pisarza miejskiego. Pod schodami ulokowano po stronie wschodniej dwa sklepy, po stronie zachodniej zaś - wozownię. Tenże burmistrz Kirchner zbudował browar miejski.
Ciekawa w okolicy Głuchołaz jest zabudowa Jarnołtówka , która znad rzeki wspina się na stoki Biskupiej Kopy. Dokumenty wspominają o osadzie już z 1268 r. Była to wioska zamieszkana głównie przez górników, ryjących Opawy i przeszukujących aluwia Złotego Potoku w poszukiwaniu złota i innych kruszców.

Leżąca w Górach Opawskich Pokrzywna jest jedyną na Śląsku Opolskim miejscowością usytuowaną wśród typowego krajobrazu górskiego. Wieś rozłożyła się w dolinie Złotego Potoku, płynącego przez Zlate Hory w Czechach, Jarnołtówek, Moszczankę i Łąkę Prudnicką aż do połączenia z rzeką Prudnik pod miastem o tej samej nazwie.
Przez okolicę Pokrzywnej, w okresie średniowiecza przebiegała granica pomiędzy posiadłościami biskupów wrocławskich (od XIV w. biskupim księstwem nyskim) a okręgiem Prudnika, leżącym początkowo w granicach Moraw, a następnie - od 1337 r. - wchodzącym w skład posiadłości piastowskich książąt opolsko-niemodlińskich.

Zabytki Głuchołaz
Wieża Bramy Górnej
wzmiankowana w 1418. Obecną, 25-metrową, postawił ok. 1600 wójt głuchołaski. Później została ozdobiona renesansową attyką ze strzelnicami (kamienne rzygacze). Ceglany hełm, nie harmonizujący z całością, dodano w 1902. Pierwotnie nakrywał wieżę renesansowy dach pogrążony. Jeszcze w 2 poł. XIX w. istniała obok wieży brama z attyką. Siedział w niej celnik, pobierający opłaty od wwożonych do miasta towarów, dlatego sprytniejsi przemykali się przez mury lub wchodzili nocą, budząc strażnika uporczywym kołataniem. Na szczycie hełmu metalowa chorągiewka w kształcie głowy kozy. Pochodzi ona ze starego ratusza, a daty 1631 i 1795 dotyczą remontów ratusza, a nie wieży, W latach 70. została odnowiona, zbudowano drewniane schody na attykę - w sezonie był tu punkt widokowy. Od lata 1994 opiekują się wieżą i czasem udostępniają zwiedzającym głuchołascy harcerze.
Kościół młodzieżowy św. Franciszka
Głuchołascy ewangelicy, których liczba znacznie wzrosła w XIX w., mieli dom modlitwy w wynajętych pokojach u farbiarza Kapsa. Ponieważ gmina była uboga, pastora opłacało Towarzystwo Gustawa Adolfa. Należały do niej akoliczne wsie, m. in. Jarnołtówek, Podlesie, Sławniowice, Nowy Świętów. Pomyślano o budowie kościoła, gdy dom modlitwy okazał się za mały, a hałas domowników i gołębi przeszkadzał w modlitwie. Świątynia powstała dzięki hojnym darom, m. in. od księżniczki holenderskiej Marianny, i kolektom w śląskich kościołach. Kamień węgielny położono 14 VI 1865. Projekt opracował (za darmo) i kierował budową Hartmann z Nysy. Budowa została przerwana przez wojnę z Austrią, do której powołano też murarzy. Po skończonej wojnie, gdy wojska pruskie wracały od Zlatych Hor, ich serca krzepił widok wielkiej flagi pruskiej, powiewającej na wieży nowego kościoła. 12 XII 1866 konsekrowano kościół, który otrzymał imię Pokoju Bożego, na pamiątkę zwycięskiej wojny. Wnętrze urządzono darami: marmurowy ołtarz główny z 1890 podarował właściciel kamieniołomów w Sławniowicach, a chrzcielnicę - głuchołaski kamieniarz. Do kościoła dyrektor sądu powiatowego z Nysy dr Koch zakupił 3 dzwony (zarekwirowane podczas I wojny świat.). Nawiązanie do gotyku (wysoka wieża ze sterczynami, wyposażenie) było typowe dla świątyń ewangelickich, jakich wiele powstało na Śląsku w 2 poł. XIX w.

Open Directory Project (zwany także DMoz od Directory Mozilla) to otwarty katolog stron WWW, utrzymywany na serwerach koncernu Time Warner, w którym zarówno drzewo kategorii jak i wszelkie wpisy są redagowane przez wspólnotę redaktorów - ochotników.
Otwarty Katalog założono w miesiącu czerwcu 1998 r. Początkowo nazywał się Newhoo. Jego założycielami byli Rich Skrenta i Bob Truel z Kaliforni, jako katalog o otwartej treści, redagowany przez ochotników. W roku 1998 katalog zakupiła firma Netscape i obecnie Netscape/AOL wciąż prowadzi go i udostępnia bezpłatnie.
Katalog zawiera obecnie około 4,5 miliona stron w około 750 tysiącach kategorii utworzonych i obsługiwanych przez 70 tysięcy redaktorów, w tym ponad 15 tysięcy aktywnych. W kategorii Polska jest obecnie blisko 60 tysięcy stron opublikowanych po polsku oraz 325 redaktorów - dane z lipca 2005 roku.
DMOZ klasyfikuje strony internetowe według 'kategorii'. Kategoria to według ogólnej definicji zbiorowisko rzeczy, które mają jakiś wspólny mianownik'. Na szczycie hierarchii jest 16 kategorii 'najwyższego poziomu. One są najogólniejszym poziomem klasyfikacji. Wszystkie inne kategorie są ich podkategoriami.

Redaktorów obowiązuje swoista etyka - nie wolno im promować stron, z którymi są osobiście związani, nie mogą odmawiać wpisów do swoich kategorii bez dobrego uzasadnienia, powinni redagować wpisy możliwie jak najbardziej obiektywnie.
Uprawnienia poszczególnych redaktorów są zróżnicowane. Redaktor szerszej kategorii (np: World:Polska:Nauka_i_edukacja) ma dostęp do wszystkich kategorii w niej zawartych np. World:Polska:Nauka_i_edukacja:Chemia. Najlepsi redaktorzy mają prawo redagowania całego katalogu, a cieszący się największym zaufaniem - prawo przyznawania innym uprawnień, a w razie naruszania przez redaktora zasad etycznych ODP, współdecydowania o odbieraniu uprawnień oraz o zasadach działania całego katalogu. Są oni nazywani metaredaktorami - obecnie jest ich około 140, w tym Władysław Majewski z Polski. W sierpniu 2004 roku większość zadań zespołu etatowego ODP przekazana została 9 metaredaktorom, zwanych adminami.
Struktura kategorii jest tworzona przez samych redaktorów. Każdy redaktor może tworzyć nowe podkategorie w obrębie redagowanej przez siebie kategorii. Zmiany nazw i przenoszenie kategorii muszą być uprzednio uzgodnione i mogą być wykonywane tylko przez redaktorów z odpowiednimi uprawnieniami. Miejscem uzgadniania takich zmian jest głównie Forum Redaktorów, do którego dostęp mają wyłącznie redaktorzy ODP.
Katalog ogólny składa się również z dwóch "podkatalogów". Jednym z nich jest dział Adult (ang. dorosły) http://dmoz.org/Adult/ gromadzący strony tylko dla dorosłych. Wejście do tej części nie jest możliwe przez linki w katalogu ogólnym, tak aby zapobiec możliwości przeglądania przez dzieci.
