Góry Opawskie to jedyny masyw górski na Opolszczyźnie. Ma on charakter wyraźnie wypiętrzonego grzbietu, ciągnącego się od doliny Białej Głuchołaskiej na zachodzie po dolinę Prudnika na wschodzie. Jest to najbardziej wysunięty na wschód fragment Sudetów polskich. Głuchołazy to kolejne średniowieczne miasteczko w dawnym "imperium" biskupów z Wrocławia. Początkowo Głuchołazy rozwijały się głównie dzięki górnictwu złota, srebra i żelaza, a także specjalności całych Sudetów - tkactwu lnianemu. Ok. XVII w. zmęczeni kontrreformacyjną aktywnością jezuici przyjeżdżali reperować tu nadwątlone zdrowie, tworząc jedyny w swoim rodzaju mnisi zdrój.

Obszar Gór Opawskich obfituje w różnorodne pod względem trudności trasy rowerowe oraz szlaki turystyczne Jarnołtówek - wieś powstała jako osada w XIII w. założona przez kolonistów z Frankonii. Początkowo parano się płukaniem złota, lecz po wyczerpaniu kruszcu podstawa utrzymania stało się tkactwo, a nawet produkcja papieru. Od XIX w. wieś ma charakter letniskowy i sanatoryjny. Pokrzywna, jest malowniczo położoną wsią letniskowa położoną w centrum Gór Opawskich. Leżąca w dolinie Złotego Potoku już od połowy XIX wieku przyjmowała turystów, którzy nazwali tę okolicę Górnośląską Szwajcarią. Pod koniec XIX wieku powstały tu pierwsze oznakowane szlaki turystyczne, natomiast największy rozwój turystyki datuje się na okres przed I wojną światową, kiedy zbudowano stację kolejową i otwarto drogę z Prudnika do Głuchołaz, a później po wybudowaniu zalewu na Złotym Potoku. Dziś okolica i sama Pokrzywna przeżywają drugą młodość. Główną letnią atrakcją Pokrzywnej jest leśne kąpielisko na bazie niewielkiego przedwojennego zalewu. Z Pokrzywną, w kierunku Prudnika łączy się Moszczanka, także aspirująca do miana wsi turystycznej.

Zabytki Głuchołaz
Rynek
Najstarszym zabytkiem miasta jest szachownicowy układ urbanistyczny, zachowany czasów XIII-wiecznej lokacji. Tworzy go prostokątny rynek i dziesięć wybiegających z niego ulic oraz łukowe ulice, prowadzące dawniej wzdłuż murów miejskich, zbiegające się przy dawnych bramach - Górnej i Dolnej. Ulice, łączące obie bramy i biegnące wzdłuż rynku, wyznaczały przebieg starego traktu Wrocław - Morawy. Ponoć taki układ miast byt wzorowany na rzymskich obozach wojskowych. Podczas niedawnych prac remontowych odkryto na Rynku 3 warstwy bruku; najstarsza pochodzi prawdopodobnie z XVI w.
Do lat 70. ubiegłego stulecia stał na rynku pręgierz; rozebrano go i w 6 częściach wmurowano w bruk rynku w miejscu starego ratusza. Dziś nie ma po nim śladu. Były tu też pierwsze "wodociągi miejskie", czyli studnie z żurawiami. Po wojnach śląskich zasadzono na rynku cztery lipy, jednak szybko zmarniały. Wiosną 1994 rynek wzbogacił się o nowy element dekoracyjny - rzeźbę "siedzącego koziołka", autorstwa ucznia X.
Ratusz
Nic nie wiadomo o pierwszym ratuszu. Kolejny, renesansowy, powstał w 1552, staraniem burmistrza Kirchnera, dobrego gospodarza, który zbudował też browar miejski. Była to piętrowa budowla z ceglanym dachem. W piwnicy znajdowała się m. in. izba tortur z odpowiednimi narzędziami. Dach wieńczyła wieżyczka, a na ścianie, oprócz zegara słonecznego, namalowany był czerwony rak. Podobno w czasie powodzi 1460 znaleziono raka wysoko w załomie murów. Ratusz miał podcienia, a w jednym z przyległych kramów polski próżniak sprzedawał ciastka. W 1730 zbudowano przy ratuszu odwach, czyli wartownię: dopiero od tego czasu stacjonował w mieście garnizon austriacki. Uszkodzona w wojnie trzydziestoletniej budowla zaczęła pękać. Nie dbano o nią, gdyż miasto było zbyt biedne. Dopiero po wielkim pożarze (1834) podjęto decyzję o rozbiórce.

Open Directory Project (zwany także DMoz od Directory Mozilla) to otwarty katolog stron WWW, utrzymywany na serwerach koncernu Time Warner, w którym zarówno drzewo kategorii jak i wszelkie wpisy są redagowane przez wspólnotę redaktorów - ochotników.
Otwarty Katalog założono w miesiącu czerwcu 1998 r. Początkowo nazywał się Newhoo. Jego założycielami byli Rich Skrenta i Bob Truel z Kaliforni, jako katalog o otwartej treści, redagowany przez ochotników. W roku 1998 katalog zakupiła firma Netscape i obecnie Netscape/AOL wciąż prowadzi go i udostępnia bezpłatnie.
Katalog zawiera obecnie około 4,5 miliona stron w około 750 tysiącach kategorii utworzonych i obsługiwanych przez 70 tysięcy redaktorów, w tym ponad 15 tysięcy aktywnych. W kategorii Polska jest obecnie blisko 60 tysięcy stron opublikowanych po polsku oraz 325 redaktorów - dane z lipca 2005 roku.
DMOZ klasyfikuje strony internetowe według 'kategorii'. Kategoria to według ogólnej definicji zbiorowisko rzeczy, które mają jakiś wspólny mianownik'. Na szczycie hierarchii jest 16 kategorii 'najwyższego poziomu. One są najogólniejszym poziomem klasyfikacji. Wszystkie inne kategorie są ich podkategoriami.

Redaktorów obowiązuje swoista etyka - nie wolno im promować stron, z którymi są osobiście związani, nie mogą odmawiać wpisów do swoich kategorii bez dobrego uzasadnienia, powinni redagować wpisy możliwie jak najbardziej obiektywnie.
Uprawnienia poszczególnych redaktorów są zróżnicowane. Redaktor szerszej kategorii (np: World:Polska:Nauka_i_edukacja) ma dostęp do wszystkich kategorii w niej zawartych np. World:Polska:Nauka_i_edukacja:Chemia. Najlepsi redaktorzy mają prawo redagowania całego katalogu, a cieszący się największym zaufaniem - prawo przyznawania innym uprawnień, a w razie naruszania przez redaktora zasad etycznych ODP, współdecydowania o odbieraniu uprawnień oraz o zasadach działania całego katalogu. Są oni nazywani metaredaktorami - obecnie jest ich około 140, w tym Władysław Majewski z Polski. W sierpniu 2004 roku większość zadań zespołu etatowego ODP przekazana została 9 metaredaktorom, zwanych adminami.
Struktura kategorii jest tworzona przez samych redaktorów. Każdy redaktor może tworzyć nowe podkategorie w obrębie redagowanej przez siebie kategorii. Zmiany nazw i przenoszenie kategorii muszą być uprzednio uzgodnione i mogą być wykonywane tylko przez redaktorów z odpowiednimi uprawnieniami. Miejscem uzgadniania takich zmian jest głównie Forum Redaktorów, do którego dostęp mają wyłącznie redaktorzy ODP.
Katalog ogólny składa się również z dwóch "podkatalogów". Jednym z nich jest dział Adult (ang. dorosły) http://dmoz.org/Adult/ gromadzący strony tylko dla dorosłych. Wejście do tej części nie jest możliwe przez linki w katalogu ogólnym, tak aby zapobiec możliwości przeglądania przez dzieci.
