Głuchołazy to przygraniczne miasto w województwie opolskim o charakterze wypoczynkowym i sanatoryjnym. Zarazem jest małym ośrodkiem przemysłowym.
Miasto leży u stóp Gór Opawskich, pod Parkową Górą zwaną też Górą Chrobrego (543 m n.p.m.), nad rzeką Białą Głuchołaską.
Główną atrakcją miasta Głuchołazy
są promenady i alejki prowadzące aż na chrobrego, stare miasto, które dotychczas ma średniowieczny układ budynków, a także fragmenty zachowanych murów obronnych.

W XIX wieku nastąpił szybki rozwój części zdrojowej Głuchołaz, miasto stało się znanym na Śląsku uzdrowiskiem z licznymi sanatoriami, domami wczasowymi i pensjonatami.
Uzdrowisko Głuchołazy znane było ze stosowania zabiegów wodolecznictwa.
Do gminy Głuchołazy należy Jarnołtówek
- urocza miejscowość wypoczynkowa położona w dolinie Złotego Potoku, u stóp Kopy Biskupiej.
Jarnołtówek jest popularnym letniskiem i jednym z niewielu na Opolszczyźnie miejsc, gdzie uprawiać można narciarstwo. Jakkolwiek cały Jarnołtówek jest ładny, to szczególną uwagę zwrócić w nim warto na zakątek (nad Złotym Potokiem i Bolkówką), gdzie stoi budynek pałacyku z XIX w., wybudowanego na dolnej części murów dworu z XVI w.

Historia Głuchołaz
Do XVI wieku mieszkańcy grodu trudnili się głównie wydobywaniem złota. Oblicza się, że przez około 250 lat eksploatacji głuchołaskich złóż uzyskano tu blisko 2800 kilogramów kruszcu. Źródłem utrzymania mieszkańców było także rolnictwo. Pomyślnie rozwijały się też takie rzemiosła jak piekarnictwo, rzeźnictwo czy szewstwo. Właściciele domów w mieście mieli dodatkowo przywilej warzenia piwa i jego sprzedaży. Na początku XVI wieku zaczęły w mieście powstawać murowane kamienice, a w 1552 roku w rynku stanął renesansowy ratusz. Wybrukowano wówczas miejskie ulice.
Działania militarne wojny trzydziestoletniej oraz wojen śląskich i napoleońskich ominęły Głuchołazy, jednak ciągłe przemarsze i stacjonowanie wojsk wyniszczyło miasto.
Ponowny jego rozwój nastąpił w drugiej połowie XIX wieku, zwłaszcza po wybudowaniu w 1875 roku linii kolejowej. Połączyła ona Nysę z Opawą, a od roku 1888 także z Wiedniem i Pragą. W mieście powstały wówczas liczne zakłady przemysłowe. Nastąpił również szybki rozwój części zdrojowej Głuchołaz, która niebawem stała się znanym na Śląsku uzdrowiskiem z licznymi sanatoriami, domami wczasowymi i pensjonatami. W tutejszych sanatoriach stosowano zabiegi wodolecznictwa.

Otwarty Katalog założono w miesiącu czerwcu 1998 r. Początkowo nazywał się Newhoo. Jego założycielami byli Rich Skrenta i Bob Truel z Kaliforni, jako katalog o otwartej treści, redagowany przez ochotników. W roku 1998 katalog zakupiła firma Netscape i obecnie Netscape/AOL wciąż prowadzi go i udostępnia bezpłatnie.

Redaktorem w ODP może zostać każdy chętny. Musi jednak w swym wniosku wykazać, że posiada kwalifikacje potrzebne do prowadzenia danej kategorii. Na początku redaktorzy uzyskują zwykle prawo redagowania niewielkich kategorii. Redaktorów obowiązuje swoista etyka - nie wolno im promować stron, z którymi są osobiście związani, nie mogą odmawiać wpisów do swoich kategorii bez dobrego uzasadnienia, powinni redagować wpisy możliwie jak najbardziej obiektywnie.
Uprawnienia poszczególnych redaktorów są zróżnicowane. Redaktor szerszej kategorii (np: World:Polska:Nauka_i_edukacja) ma dostęp do wszystkich kategorii w niej zawartych np. World:Polska:Nauka_i_edukacja:Chemia. Najlepsi redaktorzy mają prawo redagowania całego katalogu, a cieszący się największym zaufaniem - prawo przyznawania innym uprawnień, a w razie naruszania przez redaktora zasad etycznych ODP, współdecydowania o odbieraniu uprawnień oraz o zasadach działania całego katalogu. Są oni nazywani metaredaktorami - obecnie jest ich około 140, w tym Władysław Majewski z Polski. W sierpniu 2004 roku większość zadań zespołu etatowego ODP przekazana została 9 metaredaktorom, zwanych adminami.
Struktura kategorii jest tworzona przez samych redaktorów. Każdy redaktor może tworzyć nowe podkategorie w obrębie redagowanej przez siebie kategorii. Zmiany nazw i przenoszenie kategorii muszą być uprzednio uzgodnione i mogą być wykonywane tylko przez redaktorów z odpowiednimi uprawnieniami. Miejscem uzgadniania takich zmian jest głównie Forum Redaktorów, do którego dostęp mają wyłącznie redaktorzy ODP.
Katalog ogólny składa się również z dwóch "podkatalogów". Jednym z nich jest dział Adult (ang. dorosły) http://dmoz.org/Adult/ gromadzący strony tylko dla dorosłych. Wejście do tej części nie jest możliwe przez linki w katalogu ogólnym, tak aby zapobiec możliwości przeglądania przez dzieci. Innym jest dział Kids and Teens (ang. dzieci i młodzież) http://dmoz.org/Kids_and_Teens/ mający na celu stworzenie najlepszego katalogu ze stronami dla dzieci i młodzieży.
