Open Directory Project (zwany także DMoz od Directory Mozilla) to otwarty katolog stron WWW, utrzymywany na serwerach koncernu Time Warner, w którym zarówno drzewo kategorii jak i wszelkie wpisy są redagowane przez wspólnotę redaktorów - ochotników.
Otwarty Katalog założono w miesiącu czerwcu 1998 r. Początkowo nazywał się Newhoo. Jego założycielami byli Rich Skrenta i Bob Truel z Kaliforni, jako katalog o otwartej treści, redagowany przez ochotników. W roku 1998 katalog zakupiła firma Netscape i obecnie Netscape/AOL wciąż prowadzi go i udostępnia bezpłatnie.
Katalog zawiera obecnie około 4,5 miliona stron w około 750 tysiącach kategorii utworzonych i obsługiwanych przez 70 tysięcy redaktorów, w tym ponad 15 tysięcy aktywnych. W kategorii Polska jest obecnie blisko 60 tysięcy stron opublikowanych po polsku oraz 325 redaktorów - dane z lipca 2005 roku.
DMOZ klasyfikuje strony internetowe według 'kategorii'. Kategoria to według ogólnej definicji zbiorowisko rzeczy, które mają jakiś wspólny mianownik'. Na szczycie hierarchii jest 16 kategorii 'najwyższego poziomu. One są najogólniejszym poziomem klasyfikacji. Wszystkie inne kategorie są ich podkategoriami.
Wiele wyszukiwarek i portali, np. Google, a wśród polskich portali WP, pobiera co jakiś czas całą zawartość DMOZ i włącza ją w swoje katalogi. Wpisanie strony do DMOZ powoduje więc, że po pewnym czasie trafia ona wraz z właściwym opisem do wielu liczących się wyszukiwarek. Na stronach katalogu ODP nie ma żadnych reklam i projekt działa na zasadach non-profit.
ODP pozwala na nieodpłatne wykorzystanie swojej zawartości każdej osobie, która przestrzega licencji. W jednym pliku zawarte są dane na temat struktury Katalogu (np. nazwy wszystkich kategorii), a w innym - zawartość Katalogu (adresy URL, tytuły i opisy wszystkich opublikowanych stron)
Redaktorem w ODP może zostać każdy chętny. Musi jednak w swym wniosku wykazać, że posiada kwalifikacje potrzebne do prowadzenia danej kategorii. Na początku redaktorzy uzyskują zwykle prawo redagowania niewielkich kategorii. Redaktorów obowiązuje swoista etyka - nie wolno im promować stron, z którymi są osobiście związani, nie mogą odmawiać wpisów do swoich kategorii bez dobrego uzasadnienia, powinni redagować wpisy możliwie jak najbardziej obiektywnie.
Uprawnienia poszczególnych redaktorów są zróżnicowane. Redaktor szerszej kategorii (np: World:Polska:Nauka_i_edukacja) ma dostęp do wszystkich kategorii w niej zawartych np. World:Polska:Nauka_i_edukacja:Chemia. Najlepsi redaktorzy mają prawo redagowania całego katalogu, a cieszący się największym zaufaniem - prawo przyznawania innym uprawnień, a w razie naruszania przez redaktora zasad etycznych ODP, współdecydowania o odbieraniu uprawnień oraz o zasadach działania całego katalogu. Są oni nazywani metaredaktorami - obecnie jest ich około 140, w tym Władysław Majewski z Polski. W sierpniu 2004 roku większość zadań zespołu etatowego ODP przekazana została 9 metaredaktorom, zwanych adminami.
Struktura kategorii jest tworzona przez samych redaktorów. Każdy redaktor może tworzyć nowe podkategorie w obrębie redagowanej przez siebie kategorii. Zmiany nazw i przenoszenie kategorii muszą być uprzednio uzgodnione i mogą być wykonywane tylko przez redaktorów z odpowiednimi uprawnieniami. Miejscem uzgadniania takich zmian jest głównie Forum Redaktorów, do którego dostęp mają wyłącznie redaktorzy ODP.
Katalog ogólny składa się również z dwóch "podkatalogów". Jednym z nich jest dział Adult (ang. dorosły) http://dmoz.org/Adult/ gromadzący strony tylko dla dorosłych. Wejście do tej części nie jest możliwe przez linki w katalogu ogólnym, tak aby zapobiec możliwości przeglądania przez dzieci. Innym jest dział Kids and Teens (ang. dzieci i młodzież) http://dmoz.org/Kids_and_Teens/ mający na celu stworzenie najlepszego katalogu ze stronami dla dzieci i młodzieży.
